Flat phones have been the only option for a long time, ever since the invention of smartphones. However, if you are tired of them and want to try something different, you can buy a foldable phone. Here are the best foldable phones on the market today.
Table of Contents
Samsung was one of the first companies to launch a foldable phone. Although it faced initial quality issues, the company overcame those hurdles. Today, Samsung’s foldable phones are some of the best on the market.
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 boasts the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy, the same chip that powers the company's 2023 flagship Galaxy S23 series. Samsung pairs this chip with 12GB of RAM, so performance shouldn't be an issue.
The camera is solid too, and despite being a foldable device, its battery life is similar to that of a regular flat phone. The Z Fold 5 resembles a book with a smaller 6.2-inch screen on the outside, and when you open it up, the 120Hz display is larger than a 7.6-inch tablet.
Samsung has made the hinge close without leaving a gap, a highly desirable feature that makes it difficult for debris and other particles to get between the two sides of the main display when closed.
Overall, the Z Fold 5 is the perfect choice for those who are finally ready to take the leap and embrace foldable phones.
The OnePlus Open is another great option if you're tired of flat phones and are looking for a book-style foldable phone like the Z Fold 5. This is OnePlus' first foldable phone and the hardware is pretty well done.
The main display on the inside is a 7.82-inch 120Hz LTPO display. There's also a 6.31-inch LTPO panel on the outside, allowing you to use the device as a regular phone whenever you want. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset powers the device with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage.
OnePlus also offers a solid camera array with three cameras on the back, including a 64MP telephoto lens, a 48MP wide-angle lens, and another 48MP ultra-wide-angle lens with a 114-degree field of view. There are also two other selfie cameras, one on the inside and one on the back.
The OnePlus Open launches with a suggested retail price of $1,699, but you can find it for less on Amazon. The OnePlus Open's wider form factor makes the external display easier to use, and that's one of the reasons it's better than the Galaxy Z Fold 5.
The Z Flip 5 is a solid alternative to flat phones, especially considering its clamshell design. It's basically just a regular phone that folds in half. However, the folding mechanism means you get two screens: a 3.4-inch outer display that's mostly for keeping track of notifications, and a 6.7-inch main display.
Unlike a book-style foldable, the Z Flip 5 is a great choice if you want a device that looks exactly like a regular phone. But despite its foldable form factor, it's still designed with durability in mind. For example, it has an IPX8 water resistance rating, which means it can withstand submersion in up to 1.5 meters for 30 minutes.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 powers the entire setup with 8GB of memory. You can choose between 256GB and 512GB storage variants depending on how much storage you need on your smartphone. It has dual 12MP camera lenses at the back and a single 10MP lens at the front.
As we covered in our Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 review, this is the king of clamshell folding designs, hitting almost all the major points. It’s also one of the most affordable foldable phones you can buy (at under $900).
If you find the OnePlus Open and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 too bulky, the best alternative is the clamshell folding option. In addition to the Galaxy Z Flip 5, another option worth considering is the Motorola Razr+ 2024 (also known as the Razr 50 Ultra in some regions).
The standout feature of the device is the relatively large 4-inch external display. The large size makes the external display more practical when completing certain tasks without having to fully open it to use the 6.9-inch main display inside. That main display also stands out thanks to its relatively high 165Hz refresh rate.
The phone has two rear camera lenses: a 50MP main wide-angle lens and a 50MP secondary ultra-wide-angle lens. Inside is a single 32MP selfie camera. In terms of resolution, this camera setup puts Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 5 to shame. And like Samsung's offering, the Razr+ (2024) has an IPX8 rating for water resistance.
Motorola has used Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 chip, which sits just below the flagship 8 Gen 3 thanks to the slightly inferior Adreno 735 GPU. Unlike Samsung, Motorola is offering 8GB and 12GB RAM options for the Razr+ (2024). It will be available for purchase starting July 24.
Google's Pixel Fold follows the book-style folding design of the Z Fold 5 and OnePlus Open. Like other devices in the Pixel line, the Pixel Fold runs stock Android , with the only difference being that it's optimized for the flexible form factor.
One of the best features of the Google Pixel Fold is the seamless integration of hardware and software. For example, you can easily switch from watching videos on the 5.8-inch external display to the larger 7.6-inch internal display (and vice versa) without any difficulty.
In terms of cameras, the Pixel Fold boasts one of the best Google setups on the market, which users have come to love over the years. You’ll find a 48MP main wide lens, a 10.8MP telephoto lens, and another 10.8MP ultra-wide lens with a 121-degree field of view. You also get two selfie cameras: an 8MP wide lens on the outer display and a 9.5MP lens on the inside.
In terms of performance, Google’s powerful Tensor G2 chip is paired with 12GB of memory. Like most of the foldable phones we’ve covered here, you can choose between 256GB and 512GB storage variants. While the Pixel Fold will launch with a suggested retail price of $1,799 in 2023, it’s currently available for less on Amazon.
Can't decide between a book or clamshell? The clamshell is a great option if you don't want your phone to double as a productivity tablet. Clamshells are also easier to carry around. However, the book is a good option if you want more screen space to get things done quickly.
